Leash Training
There are five easy steps to leash training. They have nothing to do with
yanking on the dogs collar. Some dogs find this very unfair, and will lose
trust in you. Others just might catch on though. The natural intinct of a
dog to a pulling leash is to pull back. It's basically like tug-of-war.
Follow these steps to make sure your dog understands you.
- Hold your leash with your upper arm next to your body, and your lower arm bent slightly out.
- Start walking, and wait till you feel the leash tighten.
- Push our your arm full length,
- Stop, move backwards or change directions.
- Watch your dog follow you, or wait for you.
This method works because you are not upsetting your dog. He just thinks you
are going somewhere else. He will catch up with you because he/she would
think he/she ahs missed a turn. He will get used to catching up with you,
and walk with you. He will soon think; hey! Every time I try to go somewhere
faster, I end up getting there slower! Maybe I should just walk right next
to my buddy!
Some dogs find it very unfair when they are tugged at, and refuse to cooperate.
You will notice if your dog is like this if everytime you tug him, he looks at you,
then pulls again. Never tug him again if he does this to you!
Your dog should catch on fast. From now, I wish you many happy walks with a
few turns here and there!
I hope this article helps!
